Projects:

DESIGN NAME:
The Skin

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Multilayered Facade

INSPIRATION:
The spatial disorder in OSTIM Organized Industrial Zone, the visual pollution caused by the arbitrary formation of building facades, due to differing functional needs of different industrial sectors and the absence of green areas were both the major problems and the main inspirations of the project. The Skin interprets this arbitrariness by designing a modular facade system, composed of multiple layers, that gives the design its eco-friendly and sustainable character.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The skin is a modular and sustainable building facade system, composed of multiple layers. The first layer is the colored shell that shows flexibility according to the functional needs. The second layer is the freestanding skin that seems to be folded arbitrarily. The void in-between them is the third layer that gives the skin its sustainable and eco-friendly character. It hides the visual pollution caused by later additions due to functional needs and it houses the green pots that are watered by the rain distilled by the skin.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The demand of OSTIM from the design team was to make a survey in the field first for understanding the tendency of parcel users for an urban renewal; then to design a facade typology with an aim to bring a controlled order to the industrial zone. Unlike other facade typologies obliged by the authority, the skin offers a flexible use to its parcel user due to its modular design for various functions. While module 1 and 2 are for companies that includes both the office and atelier function, with changing heights of the atelier doors, module 3 is designed solely for office function.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in March 2014 and finished in June 2014 in Ankara, Turkey.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The skin is made of corrugated metal sheets. The technology of the shell gives the opportunity to distill the rain and use it for watering the green pots housed in between. The colored shell is made of conventional materials, such as brick, concrete, etc., but will be dyed according to the color coding applied to the sub-zones of the industrial site. The universal color system, Natural Color System (NCS), is used as a color design tool for providing a planned visual perception in the zone. The color decisions of skins’ first layer shows variety due to changing color codes in different sub-zones.

SPECIFICATIONS / DIMENSION / PACKAGE / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The master plan of OSTIM Zone requires an attached facade use of 9.50 m canopy height and 10 m width per lot. The roof slope is max. 20%. The modulation differs by functional needs of atelier. In every module, the width of atelier doors is 6 m., but their heights show variation. In module 1, the doors are 6 m. high; in module 2 this height is raised to 8 m for lifts. Module 3 allows the design of two storeys for office function, but regarding the master plan notes, it gives the opportunity to add a mezzanine floor.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Project includes a three step research process. First, a series of in-depth interview have been conducted with management of OSTIM to understand the problems and opportunities of the area. Secondly, by observation and measurement color, material and design of industrial structures have been analyzed. Lastly, a questionnaire has been applied to firm owners and employees to understand the needs and expectations. All of this information was used to define the design principles and elements for facades.

CHALLENGE:
Challenges are the development conditions brought by the development plan, resistance for the renovation by manufacturers due to economic and practical reasons, material and budget constrains for the facades that should be easy-clean, repairable and low cost.
